Wenda soon settles into the lively London street life and makes firm friends with Jonty Blake, the mischievous son of a neighbouring stallholder. When Jonty leaves London to become an apprentice in Scotland, Wenda is heartbroken. Not long after, Wenda loses her mother, and for a time, she believes her life will never amount to more than a series of misfortunes.
Wenda, however, is strong and willful, and she knows she must find a way to support her gifted brother, Ollie. Determined to make some kind of life for them, Wenda gets married but soon finds that this was a mistake, and she is left destitute again.
Now, supporting not only Ollie but her infant son Ruan, Wenda comes face to face with the love of her life, Jonty Blake.
